Director's Note for A Chorus Line
picture of Bill Starr, Director Dear Friends of WVLO,

Most people when A Chorus Line is mentioned they think it is a show with a lot of dancing. Although that is true, and dance is the common thread, and what connects it all together, the real story is about the people who are putting themselves on the line. So they stand before you... bare, naked, scared, and vulnerable, and wanting to be accepted for who they are, and not what someone told them to be.

WHY are each of them involved with dance? The reasons differ. Some used it as an escape from their everyday, mundane, or horrific life. Some found it natural to put on a pair of dance shoes, and let the music transport them away to 'another place', while others found it fun or a challenge or a place to hide away from reality, and not face the cruel outside world. It was a place to be honest and themself. One can only assume how much a dancer has to give up when they have chosen this field, but they have no idea that it takes a total commitment. It becomes your passion as you leave behind friends, family, and dedicate yourself to ART. It is a marriage between the two of you and becomes a love affair. It is feeling, a part of something that is so fulfilling yet it is intangible. You cannot put your hands on it but only feel it in your mind, body, and soul.

Dancers are considered insane by those who cannot hear the music— unknown
